Hévíz
Hévíz
Life in the spa town of Hévíz revolves around its extraordinary natural thermal lake – the biggest in Europe, the second-biggest in the world and a Mecca for those in need of a warming wallow. Hot springs feed a 40-metre-deep crater; the temperature hovers at around 30º all year round, allowing bathers to take to the lake in the depths of winter with steam rising from the surface. The water is actually mildly radioactive – prolonged immersion isn’t advised or you’ll come out glowing at the edges – and is recommended for the relief of rheumatic disorders. The mud dredged from the lake bed is also used in face packs and other beauty treatments. This is heaven for those after a luxury or health break, and there are numerous ‘wellness’ hotels offering a broad spectrum of treatments and packages. Go on – treat yourself to a good old pampering!
